Prohibited Items: What Can’t Go in a Dumpster?

Avoid costly fines at the landfill. Learn why batteries, tires, and wet paint are strictly banned from general waste bins.

Landfills in Utah have strict environmental regulations. Dumping prohibited items isn’t just bad for the planet; it results in massive fines that are passed directly to the renter.

The “No-Go” List

  • Batteries: Car batteries contain lead and acid. They must go to an auto parts store or recycling center.
  • Tires: Tires cannot be buried. Most tire shops will recycle them for a small fee.
  • Wet Paint & Chemicals: Liquid paint is hazardous. However, dried latex paint cans are usually acceptable.
  • Freon Appliances: Refrigerators and AC units need certified drainage before disposal.

If you find these items during your cleanout, set them aside. Many counties have free hazardous waste drop-off days for residents.
