Landfills in Utah have strict environmental regulations. Dumping prohibited items isn’t just bad for the planet; it results in massive fines that are passed directly to the renter.
The “No-Go” List
- Batteries: Car batteries contain lead and acid. They must go to an auto parts store or recycling center.
- Tires: Tires cannot be buried. Most tire shops will recycle them for a small fee.
- Wet Paint & Chemicals: Liquid paint is hazardous. However, dried latex paint cans are usually acceptable.
- Freon Appliances: Refrigerators and AC units need certified drainage before disposal.
If you find these items during your cleanout, set them aside. Many counties have free hazardous waste drop-off days for residents.
